Bank Notes

The First National Bank of Gardiner (Charter #10676) was located in Douglas County, Oregon where it commenced operation in 1915 and ceased printing money in 1935. That 21 year printing period was a fairly normal lifespan for a National Bank. During its’ operation, the First National Bank of Gardiner printed $177,790 worth of national currency, issued in 8 different types in 3 different denominations.

1902 Blue Seal – Large Note

The 1902 Blue Seal Bank Notes from Gardiner were issued in $10 and $20 denominations. All Blue Seals were printed on sheets of four notes, three of which were in $10 denominations and one in a $20. Signers of the notes were: Gabe E. Parker, Register of the Treasury; John Burke, Treasurer of the United States; Harold L. Edmunds, Cashier; and John N. Hedden or W.H. Hewett, President.

1929 Brown Seal – Small Note

The 1929 Brown Seal Bank Notes from Gardiner were issued in $5, $10, and $20 denominations. The notes were of two ‘Types’, defined by two characteristic differences. First, the Type 1 note bears the Charter number in large black, vertically positioned numerals only, whereas the Type 2 will have an additional charter number printed with brown lettering near the serial numbers. Second, the Type 1 note will have a serial number that starts with a letter between “A” and “F” and will end with the letter “A”, whereas the Type 2 note will have a serial number that starts with the letter “A” and ends with a number. All Type 1 small size national bank notes were printed on sheets of six notes, with the “A” through “F” prefix of the serial number signifying the position of the note on the sheet. Type 2 notes were printed individually and were the total number of notes printed for the denomination, not sheets. Signers of the notes were: Edward E. Jones, Register of the Treasury; Walter O. Woods, Treasurer of the United States; Oscar H. Hinsdale, Bank Cashier; and Thomas W. Angus, Bank President.
